Sex Isn’t Real:
Trans Methods for Histories of Sex Science

Sex is everywhere in the history of science, yet the very ideas of “sex” and its binary of “male” and “female” are themselves the product of that history. Using a trans methodology, this talk rejects the received wisdom of a physical reality of “biological sex” and makes the case that “sex” has more to do with the power to classify than with bodies themselves.
Beans Velocci is an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania. This talk draws on their new book, Sex Isn’t Real: The Invention of an Incoherent Binary, just out from Duke University Press.
