A Same-Sex Marriage in Early America

Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake lived together for 44 years in Weybridge, Vermont, from 1807 to 1851. Townspeople commonly regarded the relationship, as one local man put it, “as if Miss Bryant and Miss Drake were married to each other.” What can their union tell us about the history of same-sex marriage?
